Nehru Did Not Give China India's Security Council Seat. He Did Turn Down Two Feelers, Then Told Parliament There Was No Offer
Seven claims tested against Nehru's own letters, the minutes of his Moscow talks, the Lok Sabha record, the UN Charter and American diplomatic files. The seat was never India's to lose, and China held it before Nehru ever spoke. But on his sister's account Washington sounded India out in 1950, Moscow's prime minister raised it in 1955, Nehru said no both times, and eight weeks after writing that down he told the Lok Sabha there had been "no offer formal or informal". Every claim graded, including what ministers and MPs of both parties have said about it since 2019.
The point of view
On 27 September 1955 a Congress MP asked Jawaharlal Nehru whether India had refused a Security Council seat "informally offered" to it. Nehru said there had been "no offer formal or informal, of this kind". His own papers say more. In August 1950 he told his sister, India's ambassador in Washington, that India was "not going to countenance" an American move to put India in China's place. In June 1955 Moscow's prime minister raised India as "the sixth member". In August 1955 Nehru told every Chief Minister the Americans had made "suggestions". This file reads all of it, and the Charter that made any "offer" impossible.
