By 1213 a Kakatiya General Had Dammed a Lake and Built a Temple Beside It. Both Still Work — Here Is What the Stone Says
The inscriptions the Kakatiyas left at Palampet, Pakhal and Bayyaram, read in the published translations; the sandbox foundation and the bricks lighter than water, in the numbers from the UNESCO nomination dossier; and what Telangana's Mission Kakatiya has and has not proved about reviving the tanks.
The point of view
On a pillar of polished black basalt in the temple compound at Palampet, a Sanskrit poem in Telugu script says that a general named Rudra "constructed a pond, which stands like an ocean" and then endowed the god he had consecrated beside it, on a Sunday in the spring of 1213. The pond is still there, still irrigating fields. The temple beside it stands on sand, with a tower of bricks that float. This Investigation reads the inscriptions the Kakatiyas carved, opens the dossier that won Ramappa its UNESCO listing in 2021, and asks what a tank-building dynasty left behind — and what a modern state got when it tried to bring them back.
