Arrested in Bhopal, Flown Out on a State Plane the Same Day: Who Let Union Carbide's Chairman Go, and What the Courts Did Next
On 7 December 1984 the police arrested Warren Anderson in Bhopal. The same day he was released on bail and flown to Delhi on a Madhya Pradesh government plane. This file tests twelve claims, from the death toll to the CIA cable, the $470 million settlement, the 1996 judgment that reduced the charges, the 2010 verdict and the waste burned at Pithampur in 2025, against the courts' own words and the government's own records. Updated to 11 October 2026.
The point of view
Four days after the gas, the man at the top of the company came to Bhopal. He was arrested the same day and flown out the same day, on a state government plane. Forty-two years later no government has published a written order saying who let him go. A Chief Minister, a Foreign Secretary, a collector, a director of aviation and a CIA analyst each pointed somewhere different. This file reads the court orders, the CIA cable, the Lok Sabha debate and the state's own figures. It shows what is proved, what is only claimed, and which popular claims fail.
