2,733 Sikhs Killed in Delhi in One Week, Ten Inquiries, Two SITs and One Leader Jailed for Life: What the Record Says
Delhi, 31 October to 7 November 1984, told from the government's own files: the death count and why it changed four times, what every commission found in its own words, what Rajiv Gandhi actually said on 19 November, and where the politicians it names stand in court on 11 October 2026, so far as the court record could be traced. The record names mobs, local Congress(I) leaders, policemen and the officials who failed; it does not blame a community. The Nanavati Commission found local Congress(I) leaders and workers had incited or helped the mobs, and found "absolutely no evidence" against Rajiv Gandhi; both findings are in the same report.
The point of view
In the week after Indira Gandhi was shot, 2,733 Sikhs were killed in Delhi. That is the government's own count, made by the Delhi Administration's Home Secretary in 1988 and accepted by the Nanavati Commission. The Nanavati Commission found in 2005 that an "angry outburst became an organized carnage", that local Congress(I) leaders and workers "had either incited or helped the mobs", and that there was "absolutely no evidence" against Rajiv Gandhi. Of 587 Delhi FIRs, 25 had ended in conviction by 2005. One Congress leader, Sajjan Kumar, was jailed for life and died in custody on 20 August 2026; we found no Supreme Court decision on his appeal. Jagdish Tytler is on trial for murder, has pleaded not guilty and has not been convicted. Kamal Nath, whom the Commission declined to find against, has not been charged and denies the allegations.
